Horizon Hunters Gathering is a cooperative action game (developed by Guerrilla for PS5 and PC) that lets up to three players team up as heroic Hunters to protect a world under threat from deadly machines.

Combat is tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based, building on the tactical precision of the Horizon games while embracing the dynamics of team play.

While Horizon Hunters Gathering might seem like just another side-project, it’s actually the main game many at the Dutch studio are working on right now, two sources familiar with the state of the franchise told us. According to one source, many of the staff working on Horizon Zero Dawn 3 were pulled over to help with Horizon Hunters Gathering, which Sony is committed to making a multiplayer success. Another source suggested fans might not see the next true Aloy adventure for three to five years, which would make it a PlayStation 6 game, though it could still appear on PS5 as a cross-gen release.

PlayStation Reboots ‘Horizon Hunters Gathering’ as Live-Service Strategy Struggles - Bloomberg

Guerrilla Games, the Amsterdam-based PlayStation subsidiary behind the Horizon franchise, has been working to reboot the game since June, said the people, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the project’s future. Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope.
The game is not yet cancelled, but the studio told staff in a meeting on Wednesday that they will have through December to impress executives with their next milestone, the people said. Many of the developers on Horizon Hunters Gathering will be reassigned to a different project that will also be evaluated at the end of the year.
A representative for PlayStation declined to comment.
